Functional Pottery
Considering our weather in the Kansas City area, pit firing is only feasible for 5 months out of the year. Thermal shock, due to sudden changes in temperature, makes pit firing not an option in the cold months. At least...not if I want my pots to come out in one piece.
So...during the winter months, I focus on my other pottery love: Functional Pottery.
I love to cook and entertain...and serving food in pots I have made makes the experience even richer. Plates, bowls, casseroles, pitchers, teapots, platters, mugs...a wonderful dizzying array of shapes to make. Not to mention the opportunity to glaze and decorate in a more controlled manner. A retail showroom full of my functional pottery, as well as my pit-fired work, can be found at my gallery..."The Potter's Obsession" in south Kansas City, Missouri. I also teach wheel throwing classes at that location.
My functional pottery can be found in two books...both published by Lark Publishing Company..."500 Bowls" and "500 Cups".
